The Hospitality Workers Training Centre (HWTC) is a non-profit sector-based workforce development organization.

Training to Employ — New Entrants

We provide high quality, hands-on and free of cost occupational training to previously unemployed individuals. The training empowers them with the skills and support needed to find a well-paying job in Toronto’s hospitality industry.
We regularly hold Information Sessions about our upcoming courses and we recruit participants from partner non-profit organizations.  Our trainees come from a wide range of backgrounds including people who are unemployed, those transitioning from other industries, people looking to get Canadian work experience and many others.

Cross-training and Career Development — Current Hospitality Workers

We offer training courses to existing hospitality workers to help them advance professionally and personally. We work closely with the union, UNITE HERE Local 75, to offer free training opportunities for members.
Our training  programs for the current hospitality workforce provide skills that support individuals’ advancement and mobility and help them access more hours and gain transferable skills. Also, we regularly offer computer and English classes at Hotel and Food Service properties to help build skills that support career and life goals.

Building A Strong Workforce — Hospitality Industry

We work alongside Toronto’s hospitality industry to provide new highly trained talent, and develop existing staff for higher performance and growth. Our training is designed to fulfill the current needs of the industry. The hospitality industry of Toronto actively participates in curriculum development and provides avenues for training and paid placements of our trainees.

Our Approach
  • Practical Training: We use a hands-on approach to training including on-site training at industry properties or at Hawthorne Food & Drink. Our courses are designed to be short and intensive to be impactful.

  • Accessibility: We facilitate access to wrap-around supports such as child care, housing and settlement services to create the context for success.
  • Ongoing Support: We are with our trainees throughout their journey to success— from training to placement and even after. Our graduates meet every week in moderated meet-ups and our Journey Coach stays in touch with them for at least a year after employment to offer them advice and support.
