The Hospitality industry in Toronto is large, and growing. If you’re currently unemployed and hoping to find an entry point to the Hospitality Industry, our training programs might be right for you. All of our training programs are:

  • Hands-on focused to help you build the practical skills to prepare you for employment.
  • Connected to industry hiring needs and employment opportunities.
  • Short and intensive to get you trained and working as quickly as possible.

Attend a weekly information session to learn more about the courses and how to apply and start training and working.

Information sessions are held every Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at 60 Richmond Street East in the second floor Amenity Room.

Restaurant and Banquet Server Training
Course Description:
In this course, training participants will practice and refine their skills, while they receive feedback from instructors throughout the day on: technical, soft skills, work habits and occupation specific knowledge (e.g. food, alcohol, allergies, etc). Training Outcomes Include:
  • Understand and demonstrate proper grooming and uniform expectations and etiquette
  • Gain knowledge and demonstrate the ability to perform setup for a full table service
  • Gain knowledge and demonstrate the ability to perform beverage service for a full table service
  • Possess a foundational knowledge of foundational restaurant serving skills
  • Demonstrates proper work habits
  • Demonstrates effective soft skills, team work and initiative
  • Gain knowledge of and demonstrate best practices and expectations in customer service etiquette in banquet functions and restaurant service
  • Identify and effectively secure employment in the Food and Beverage industry
  • Gain knowledge of safety protocol in the event of an emergency in a hotel/venue
  • End of service procedures
  • Complete smart serve

Culinary Pre-Apprenticeship

Culinary Pre-Apprenticeship
Course Description:
The HWTC Culinary Pre-Apprenticeship is a 16 week program with the objective of preparing participants​ to enter into a:
  • Workplace apprenticeship (paid and studying at college);
  • A college-based culinary arts program (full-time in college); or
  • Kitchen employment in an entry level cooking position.
The first 8 weeks of the Pre-Apprenticeship Program will include practical and theoretical exposure to introductory culinary skills at Hawthorne Food & Drink, located at 60 Richmond Street East​ whereas the final 8 weeks will be an unpaid placement with an industry partner.   This program is funded by the Government of Ontario.  ON

Kitchen Porter

Kitchen Porter
Course Description:
Kitchen Porters represent the highest standard of excellence in kitchen cleanliness and organization. The course is 4 weeks  and delivered during the days, evenings and weekends. Practical training is delivered at Hawthorne Food & Drink, and includes a 1 week placement in a hotel kitchen.

  • Residents of Ontario, eligible to work in the province, 18+ years of age and looking for meaningful work are eligible to apply for this course.

  • Newcomers and individuals in receipt of Ontario Works or Ontario Disability Supports are encouraged to apply.

  • Able to work days, evenings and weekends.
  • Clean, with good hygiene habits.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Multi-tasks efficiently.
  • Organized, accurate and reliable.
  • Works well in a team environment.
  • Able to stand for long periods (8 hours).
  • Able to lift up to 30 lbs.

Course Description:
Guest Service Representatives welcome guests and manage check-in & check-out processes and address guests’ concerns, referrals for services, and requests for information. They do all of this while providing exceptional guest experiences and interactions.
You will need:

Course Description:
Are you interested in working as a banquet server part time or casually? You’ll get hands-on training and on-the-job experiences as well as training in Smart Serve and WHMIS.  
You will need:
  • Residents of Ontario, eligible to work in the province, 18+ years of age and looking for meaningful work are eligible to apply for this course.

  • Newcomers and individuals in receipt of Ontario Works, Ontario Disability Supports or Employment Insurance are encouraged to apply.

Many banquet shifts are evenings and weekends and the work requires you to lift at least 30lbs. You must be able to commit to all 8 sessions to be enrolled.

Course Description:
Join our walk-in information sessions to know more about the courses and the registration process. ------------------------------------------------------ These weekly information sessions are for anyone who is a resident of Ontario, eligible to work in the province, 18+ years of age and looking for meaningful work. Newcomers, youth and individuals in receipt of Ontario Works, Ontario Disability Supports or Employment Insurance are encouraged to apply. The Hospitality Workers Training Centre will provide you with hands on, vocational training for employment in Toronto’s growing Hospitality Industry.
  • The Hands-On Skills You Need: You’ll get the skills you need to break into the Hospitality industry. Most of our training happens at a hotel or at a simulated job site. We place you in training shifts at Toronto area hotels.
  • Short and Intensive Courses that Get You To Work: Our courses are designed to be short, intensive and efficient. We know you want to train quickly and start working as soon as possible. Expect to train on evenings and weekends.
  • Jobs in the Hospitality Industry: We work hand-in-hand with the top industry employers who can offer you employment right after you complete your training.  We offer training that our industry partners tell us are in demand, so we’re training for real positions that need to be filled. In addition to connecting you to relevant jobs, we will provide you job coaching, and help you with resume writing and interview skills.
